Modity Partners with Hansen Trade to Enter Ancillary Services Market

Proudly independent and leveraging stable ownership by a group of local energy companies, Modity has ambitions to be a complete energy trader; partnering with Hansen Trade enables it to extend beyond wholesale markets, giving it access to the Ancillary Services markets in Sweden and Finland.

May 13th, 2025
– Hansen Technologies (ASX:HSN), a global provider of software and services to the energy, utilities, communications, and media industries, is pleased to announce a new partnership with Swedish energy trading house Modity. With this initial implementation of Hansen’s fully modular algorithmic energy-trading platform, Modity will utilise the Hansen Trade Regulating Power/mFRR (manual Frequency Restoration Reserve) and FCR (Frequency Containment Reserve) modules to participate in the Swedish and Finnish reserve markets. It will also employ the Hansen Trade Customer Portal module for enhanced client communications, scheduling, and visualisation.

Ancillary Services markets in the Nordics have seen a notable evolution in recent years, driven by increasing renewable energy integration and market harmonisation efforts within the regional balancing model. The transition to a 15-minute market resolution enables faster and more precise balancing of fluctuations in supply and demand. These changes enhance market liquidity and open opportunities for new participants, including battery storage and flexible demand-side resources.

Jonas Ekblad, Chief Executive Officer at Modity, commented: “Modity is expanding and growing, and we must embrace future-proof solutions. After a comprehensive evaluation of different vendors and solutions, Hansen Trade stood out. With its modern architecture, advanced features and functionalities, and a large and growing customer base, Hansen Trade is the strategic option. Crucially, a Cloud-based and proven market-compliant solution is an important tool for us, enabling Modity to provide high-quality trading services to our customers.”

David Castree, President for Energy & Utilities at Hansen, commented: “Hansen is delighted to welcome Modity to the Hansen Trade community, which continues to grow and expand in response to demand from the rapidly evolving energy landscape. The emergence of new, agile entrants such as Modity is a testament to the dynamic forces at play in the Nordic region. This business model demands the flexible delivery of comprehensive features complemented by an agile approach to pricing; Hansen Trade is perfectly positioned to support this combination.”

Part of the Hansen Suite for Energy & Utilities, Hansen Trade is a fully modular, cloud-native software platform that enables trading organisations to transform their business performance, leveraging a next-generation analytics-driven logic engine to automate, optimise, and maximise all asset classes in the short-term wholesale physical power trading and auction marketplaces, as well as for ancillary services. Accelerated time-to-market and continuous market and regulatory compliance make Hansen Trade the complete trading solution.
